Creating something cool out of nothing! Literally..... The chalkboard wall!

Hi! It's been a while, so I decided that I need to update my blog. I've just been CRAZY busy lately, so I haven't been updating diligently. Anyway, this is the (short) story about how I made something cool & fun out of a boring little space of wall. When dealing with small spaces, I'm always thinking function, function, function!!! SO here's what I had to deal with....

This is what I like to call "Boring wall 1". But at least it's not navajo white anymore!

And this is "Boring Wall 2".
Unfortunately, I did NOT do a good job of documenting this process, so I'll just have to explain what I did and show the after pictures. I didn't just want to paint a wall with chalboard paint, I wanted to frame it in to define the area and give it more of a finished, built-in look. I wanted it the same height as the top of the door frame it would be next to. But the problem was this fun little smoke detector that says "Fire" in bright red letters. So, I decided to embrace the smoke detector and just let it stand out against my black chalkboard paint. Whatever.
I made my 23rd visit to the home depot and had them cut a piece of molding, with 45 degree angles. All I had to do was nail it on with my trusty Porter Cable nail gun, paint it, then slap on my chalkboard paint. And...wah lah!!
FUN chalkboard wall! With a nice frame!!!

 AND another view of it!

So, we created this awesome little spot for our guests to leave messages for each other, or for our little guests to amuse themselves when they feel like getting creative! I also added these fun little hooks with buckets to hold the chalk and eraser.

It's all about the LITTLE details, people! So, here's the cost breakdown:

  • chalkboard paint: $19
  • Trim Molding: $23
  • hooks, chalk, eraser: $4
And the GRAND TOTAL for this little re-do: $46!

Our guests absolutely LOVE this feature, and I love reading the messages they leave for me! That's it for tonight, I hope that this inspires some people who have SMALL spaces to decorate. My next post is going to be on the bathroom! And it's awesome........
